The Future of Solar in the UK

The UK solar sector is undergoing a period of rapid expansion, underpinned by falling technology costs, supportive policy, and growing consumer and business demand.

According to the House of Commons Library (May 2025), the UK has reached 18.1 GW of installed solar capacity across ~1.8 million installations. This represents significant growth since the early 2010s and provides a strong platform for the next stage of expansion

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan sets out a clear trajectory: the UK aims to reach 45–47 GW of solar by 2030, with potential upside to 54–57 GW if rooftop deployment accelerates. The forthcoming Future Homes Standard will further boost adoption by requiring solar PV on most new homes, with households expected to save around £530 annually on energy bills.

The Solar Roadmap highlights that the cost of ground-mounted solar has fallen by nearly 50% since 2016, making it one of the most cost-effective sources of new generation. Meanwhile, Ofgem’s Smart Export Guarantee Report (Year 4, 2024) shows over 283,000 small-scale generators registered in a single year, exporting 1,563 MW to the grid and receiving £30.7 million in payments (Ofgem, 2024).

As solar capacity grows, storage is becoming increasingly vital. National Grid ESO’s Future Energy Scenarios (2024) forecast that short-term battery storage will expand from ~4.5 GW today to between 23–27 GW by 2030, ensuring that solar energy can be shifted from midday to evening demand peaks (National Grid ESO, 2024).

Despite this positive trajectory, challenges remain. Grid connection constraints, planning barriers for larger solar farms, and the need for skilled installers and supply chain capacity are recognised as key hurdles (House of Commons Library, 2025; Solar Energy UK, 2024).

At MJ Energy Services, we are committed to supporting the UK’s solar transition. Through our MCS-certified teams and ECO4 expertise, we are scaling to deliver 20–50 installations per month, with a strong focus on:

  • Rooftop solar for new builds, commercial properties, and social housing
  • Integrated solar + battery solutions to maximise bill savings and export revenue

Solar is no longer a future ambition, it is a cornerstone of the UK’s present and future energy mix. As the nation progresses towards its 2030 targets, MJ Energy Services stands ready to deliver clean, affordable, and reliable solar solutions for households, businesses, and communities.

We are actively seeking to collaborate with developers, contractors, housing associations, and technology providers to accelerate the UK’s solar transition. By partnering with like-minded organisations, we can expand capacity, streamline delivery, and ensure that both households and businesses benefit from reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable energy solutions.
